Overview

If you’re a foodie and you’ve never experienced the beautiful Karoo village of Prince Albert before, what have you been doing with your long weekends all these years? It’s seriously one of the coolest breakaway spots in the Western Cape, not only for its natural beauty and laid-back vibe, but for its established food scene.

At the heart of it all lies African Relish Cooking School, where stressed out city slickers and keen cooks alike have been honing their kitchen skills and getting to know the unique flavours of the Karoo for over ten years. While the school offers day and a half long cooking experiences, the immersive 3-day eatsploration allows you to get fully engrossed in the tiny town’s culture and eat like a king in the process.

In between resident chef Camilla Comins showing you how to make the most of the amazing local produce – fresh figs, heirloom organic veggies, Karoo lamb, cold-pressed olive oil and artisanal cheeses – you’ll enjoy a guided botanical walk, visit an olive farm for a tasting, see what happens behind the scenes at a working dairy (think lots of yummy cheese tasting) and even get to run into a few of the village’s friendly ghosts on a twilight ghost walk, if you’re lucky.

Oh, and did we mention that you’ll get to feast on the fruits of your labour? Think slow-roast lamb with seasonal veggies picked from Doc Reinders’ impressive vegetable garden, hot-off-the-coals roosterkoek stuffed with boerewors you made yourself, and panna cotta starring cream from Gay’s Guernsey Dairy.

Add to that accommodation in an authentic Karoo cottage from which you can explore the many other hidden gems of the village in your own time, and it’s really a no-brainer that you need to make this experience happen for you, and fast.
